Emotional Regulation Therapy

Emotional Regulation Therapy

EMOTIONAL SELF REGULATION/EXECUTIVE FUNCTION INTERVENTION (Children Ages 3-12)

Emotional regulation is a person’s ability to effectively manage and respond to an emotional experience. This experience is intimately tied to their level of executive functioning, which is the brain’s ability to categorize and respond to a constant barrage of incoming and outgoing signals. If your child is struggling emotionally, their brain will not be able to direct these signals properly; and if their brain is not handling the signals properly, your child becomes emotionally dis-regulated.

Symptoms and effects of deficits in executive functioning and emotional self regulation include: Anxiety, anger, frustration, difficulty with transitions, learning, organization, attention (including ADHD) and memory. Many children on the autism spectrum also present with deficits in executive function and emotional self- regulation. Children who experience these deficits may often experience low self-confidence and may also be victims of bullying or become bullies themselves. Do any of these symptoms describe your child?

Kristy Davis’ approach to therapy is individualized to your child’s unique needs and is both collaborative and integrative in nature. As a speech language pathologist, Kristy’s specific intervention utilizes a language based approach that empowers children to build the intrinsic skills of understanding, expressing and regulating emotions. Modification of undesirable behaviours and building social language skills are also incorporated into therapy sessions. Kristy has received certification through The Back on Track Program, created by Stephanie John (MT, OCT, B.Psych) which is a foundational approach to her services.

Consultation and education with you, the parent, is a key component to many of our therapy sessions. The knowledge you have about your child is highly valued. Kristy works collaboratively with you to develop proven techniques and expand your use of functional communication with your child.

Deeply rooted in Kristy’s work is the sincere desire to provide you and your children with the tools that will allow you both to connect on a deeper level and thrive as a family.
